Parent Resources for TSI

Welcome Parents of UNT Students!

If you’ve found your way here to our website, you are probably assisting your student with their transition to college – we appreciate your support.  With so much information to navigate overall, we hope our webpage provides everything you need to understand the Texas Success Initiative (TSI).  Below are answers to the most frequently asked questions by parents, but we welcome you to move through either the Incoming Freshmen or Transfer pages for more specifics about the TSI process.   Better yet, have your student visit this page and begin to research their responsibility with this state mandate!

If your student has a specific question, we have a team ready to assist via email at academic.readiness@unt.edu.  We can also be reached at 940.369.7006.

What is TSI?

The Texas Success Initiative (TSI) is a program legislated by the State of Texas to improve the success of students in college.  There are two parts to the program for TSI incomplete students: an assessment to evaluate students' skills in reading, mathematics, and writing and developmental instruction designed to strengthen academic skills that need improvement.

In its basic form, the TSI mandates that ALL entering college students demonstrate they are ready for college-level coursework.  Students may demonstrate their readiness either by:

  1. Earning an acceptable score on the TSI Assessment
  2. Providing documentation that they are college-ready and are therefore exempt from taking the TSI Assessment.

Please note that TSI status does not affect your admission to the University of North Texas.  The Learning Center works with students once they have been offered admission to the University.

Will you share my student's TSI status/requirements with me?

The Learning Center staff, including the TSI Coordinators and student assistants, follows all policies established by the University of North Texas.

The University of North Texas will disclose information from a student's education records without the written consent of the student to the following individuals or under the following conditions:

Parents when:

  • the student is a dependent of the parent for tax purposes as evidenced by appropriate documentation, including the parent's most recent tax return or a student financial aid application;
  • a health or safety emergency necessitates disclosure to protect the health or safety of the student or another individual; or
  • the student is under 21 years of age at the time of the disclosure and the student has violated a federal, state or local law or any rule or UNT policy governing the use or possession of alcohol or a controlled substance and UNT has found the student in violation of the Code of Student's Rights, Responsibilities and Conduct.

You may submit the Parental Verification of Student Dependency form to our office if applicable.  Students may also submit the Student Consent for Release of Records form expressly granting you access to their information.  Receipt of either of these forms will allow our team to discuss your student’s TSI status and responsibilities more specifically.

Signed forms may be emailed to academic.readiness@unt.edu or faxed to (940) 369-8394.

Where can my student send the documentation you need?

For the fastest processing, all exemption documentation may be sent to academic.readiness@unt.edu.  There are generally 4-6 staff members checking this inbox daily and typically respond to all messages within 24-48 hours.

Students may also send their documents to us via fax at (940) 369-8394.

Where can my student take the TSI Assessment?

Students may take the TSI Assessment either here at UNT in our Testing Center, closer to home in an open testing center, or from the comfort of home via our new Online Proctoring Service.

Steps for each of these testing options are outlined on our Testing Options page.
