Exemptions

The Texas Succes Initiative law requires every entering student to demonstrate readiness in reading, writing, and math by earning an acceptable score in each area on the TSI Assessment unless you prove an exemption. review the following list to see if you might qualify for an exemption. Please review the exemption options below to see if you qualify.

There are many AP exam possibilities with the most common accepted listed here. If you have successfully completed a different AP exam and would like for us to review your score for TSI exemption purposes, please send us your score report.

Dual Credit/Previous College Credit

Reading Writing Math
Depending on what college-level course(s) you have already successfully completed, you may be exempt from taking the TSI Assessment in one or more areas. A TSI Coordinator will evaluate your COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY transcript(s) to determine if the courses you have successfully completed will qualify.
Straighterline and ALEKS are not accepted for TSI purposes.
Documentation Needed: Copy of Transcript documenting course(s) completed and grades

Degree Holder

Reading Writing Math
You are exempt in all areas if you hold a domestic associate or baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
Documentation Needed: Copy of transcript indicating degree was conferred

Military

Reading Writing Math
  • You may be exempt if you are serving on active duty as a member of the U.S. armed forces, the Texas National Guard, or as a member of a reserve component of the U.S. armed forces and have been serving for at least three years preceding enrollment
  • You may be exempt if you were honorably discharged, retired, or released from active duty as a member of the U.S. armed forces or the Texas National Guard or served as a member of the U.S. armed forces.

Previous TSI Exemption

Reading Writing Math
Often times, if you attended a previous college/university that has already determined you TSI complete, your transcripts from that previous institution may indicate the same.
Documentation Needed: Copy of transcript documenting approved test scores or college readiness

How to send proof of an exemption

Exemptions are not automatic. If your TSI status is marked as incomplete, but you feel like you qualify for one of the exemptions above, you may expedite the evaluation process by sending transcripts/score reports demonstrating your exemption directly to the Learning Center in one of the following methods.

The required documentation listed below must include your name. When corresponding with our office in writing, you must also reference your UNT ID and date of birth to help us process your requests.

Score is good for five years from date taken.		 Test Score Report, college/university transcript with scores listed, or college/university transcript showing exemption from the test at a previous institution.
Dual Credit, Degree Holder, Previous TSI Exemption College/University Transcript
Dual Credit: Please note that we need a transcript from the college/university from which you received dual credit. While most high schools indicate that a course was categorized as dual credit, we must see the college/university transcript.
